We have a lot to cover but I am very excited to write about this new hairstyle!

Without further ado, let’s get into it!

What Is A Taper Fade?

Before we dive in the specifics of the mullet with tapered fade, let us make sure we are all on the same page.

A taper fade is a traditional style that involves shorter hair on the sides and the back of the head and longer hair on top.

The result is a gradual transition from short to long hair, creating a modern and sleek look. Unlike the traditional fade haircuts you may have in mind, taper fades are less dramatic and way more natural-looking.

Even if some taper fade involve skin fade, this is always very low, just above the ears and the sides of the head and very low on the back of the head. Even low fades stop higher than taper skin fades (also taper fades don’t have to skin/bald fade, but it is only an option).

Taper fades involve smooth and natural transition between hair lengths. That’s the big difference with traditional skin fades you have in mind.

The taper fade can be achieved by clippers or scissors depending on the length of the fade. Shorter fades can get done more easily by clippers while longer fades by scissors.

Moving on the definition of mullet haircuts.

What Is a Mullet Haircut?

The mullet haircut was very popular in the 1980s and 1990s. This haircut involves long hair on top AND back of the head while its sides are short.

The mullet haircut had falled out of favor, however, recently it has experienced a resurgance in popularity thanks to its new and modern variation such as the taper fade.

The mullet was associated with various subcultures like country music, rock and roll, sports and more. Some celebrities that used to wear this style are Pat Sharp, Rod Stewart, David Beckham and many more!

The mullet hairstyle has also been a very debatable hairstyle over the years. Some people view it as a unique and bold hairstyle, while others see it as outdated and unprofessional.

Also, make sure you don’t confuse mullet with mohawk. A mullet haircut only has tapered sides. On the other hand, a mohawk is a more center-headed haircut (side hair is very short and this goes all the way down to the back of the head). There is a stripe of hair (wide or not is up to the guy’s preference) on the center of the head.

Despite the mixed opinions, the mullet has remained a popular hairstyle choice for many people, and it continues to evolve and adapt to changing fashion trends.

As the name suggests, taper fade mullet is a haircut that combines taper fade and mullet. In fact, in my eyes, it is a modern variation of the mullet. I see this as an evolution of the haircut.

The sides are gradually tapered down to short lengths (or skin fade) but the hair on top and the back of the head is kept long. You may also choose a crop top on the front end if you like.

This creates a unique and customizable hairstyle that can be tailored to suit your individual preferences and style.

How To Do A Taper Fade Mullet?

how to do taper fade mullet

First things first, to do a tapered mullet with a fade you need to use both clippers and scissors. I mean, you can also do it with scissors only but it will be way more demanding and tiring.

Below, I have written the necessary steps to create an awesome mullet haircut:

  1. Start by sectioning off the top of the hair, leaving the sides and back free.
  2. Using a clipper with a guard, begin cutting the sides and back of the hair at a longer length.
  3. Gradually decrease the length of the guard as you move down the sides and back of the hair, creating a smooth and natural fade.
  4. Blend the fade into the longer hair on top using scissors.
  5. Cut the hair on top to the desired length and style as desired.

Just above the ears and low on the back of the head near the neck, you can do skin fade or use clippers without a guard but make sure you connect this part with the rest of haircut smoothly.

The clippers over comb technique is very useful technique to transition between different hair lengths.

How To Maintain A Taper Fade Mullet

Ok, now you that you have got an awesome taper faded mullet let’s discuss how to maintain this haircut!

  1. Get regular touchups of the sides and the lower back of the head (keep the fade fresh). Depending on how fast your hair grows, you may need to get a touch-up every few weeks to keep the taper fade looking sharp.
  2. Use the right products: To keep your hair looking its best, use a high-quality shampoo and conditioner that’s designed for your hair type. You may also want to use a styling product to help define and shape your hair.
  3. Protect your hair: Sun exposure, chlorine, and other environmental factors can damage your hair and cause it to become dry and brittle. Protect your hair by wearing a hat or using a leave-in conditioner with UV protection.
  4. Brush and comb regularly: To keep your hair looking neat and polished, brush or comb it regularly to remove tangles, remove dead hair and ensure that it’s properly styled.

How To Style Taper Fade Mullet

Styling a taper fade mullet requires attention to its volume and sleekness. Below there are my top tips to styling an awesome fade mullet.

  1. Before you apply any styling product, take a shower (or just wash your hair well with shampoo)
  2. Blow dry your hair completely
  3. Get a matte styling product with strong hold. To help define your hair and add texture, use a styling product like a pomade or hair wax. Apply a small amount to your hair and work it in with your fingers, focusing on the longer hair on top. Then, also apply the styling cream on the back hair evenly.
  4. I would go for a messy looking mullet style but this is up to you. Once you have applied the styling product, play with your hair, mess it around to create a natural looking hairstyle. That’s my favorite way to do it.
  5. Some people like accesories paired with this style. I do not but you can use them if you like. If you’re looking for a fun and unique way to style your taper fade mullet, consider adding accessories like hair clips, headbands, or bandanas. These can help add personality and flair to your haircut.

That’s really all it takes to style a blowout taper fade hairstyle in general! However, make sure you get a high-quality styling product with matte look and strong hold (not those from super markets).
